“I like bread and butter
I like toast and jam
That’s what my baby feeds me
I’m her loving man.”
– “Bread and Butter” by the Newbeats, 1964

Bread is a dietary staple throughout much of the world and has been throughout history. This food can be made from the flour of grains such as wheat, corn, spelt, rice, millet, rye, or barley, or from nuts including almonds and coconut.

Not all bread looks like the loaf in our illustration. Artisan breads can range from round rolls to long, thin French-style loaves. Some bread is unleavened, meaning it does not rise and is hard and crackerlike. Other breads, such as tortillas and naan, are soft and flat. Cornbread can take many shapes and is often cut into triangles like cake.

In popular culture, the term “bread” has taken on a number of expanded and symbolic meanings. “The best thing since sliced bread” is a maxim meaning that something is very good. “Bread and water” refers to the simple rations assigned to prisoners. Bread may be used to mean food in general, as in the common prayer, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11, King James Version). “Bread” or “bread and butter” is also a slang term for money.

Bread drawing – step 3

3. Draw a curved line between the top corners of the loaf, giving it a three-dimensional shape.

Bread drawing – step 4

4. Draw another wavy square shape just below the first. This will become a slice of bread.

Bread drawing – step 5

5. Draw a curved line connecting opposite corners of the slice, following the contours of the shape. This forms the bread’s crust.

Bread drawing – step 6

6. Enclose an irregular wavy shape inside the bread slice. This indicates a slathering of butter or jam.

Bread drawing – step 7

7. Draw curved lines just inside the crust of both the slice and the loaf of bread.

Bread drawing – step 8

8. Texture the top of the loaf with small ovals and shaded dots. Many bread loaves have whole grains or seeds on top.

Bread drawing – step 9

9. Texture the loaf further by shading small circles and ovals on the cut end of the loaf and by drawing curved hatch marks on its side.
