Did you know that one of the most important components of your Etsy SEO is for your new listings to sell as much and as frequently as possible?

    Yupp! It’s true.

Even if you use the best keywords and optimize your listings properly, it still does not guarantee that you’ll rank high on Etsy and get tons of sales in (even after all that keyword research you’ve done!).

Creating a product that people love and actually want to buy is just as important as keyword research according to Etsy!

With that being said, assuming you have a good product design, the best way to jump-start your sales and rank higher in Etsy searches is going to be by promoting as much as possible and optimizing your listing with a few “hard to resist” offers to get people buying.

Promoting Your Etsy Listings to Get More Sales

When you think of promoting, you may be thinking about using your existing marketing channels like Pinterest, social media accounts, and your email list.

While these are great components to have in your Etsy marketing strategy, it’s just scratching the surface when it comes to promotions.

If you want to stand above all of the mediocre Etsy sellers and establish your Etsy business, you’ll want to start implementing promotional techniques that everyone either forgets to do or ignores.

    Free Shipping

Sales & Free Shipping are extremely crucial when selling on Etsy.

Because customers have the expectation that they will find something with:

    • Free Shipping
    • Some sort of savings (like 10% or 20% off)

Etsy puts “Shipping” and “Special offers” as the main tabs because they know that these are the two most important factors Etsy customers are looking for when finding products online.

Why pay full price for something when you can get something similar for cheaper?

You’ll have a much higher chance of being found if you simply offer Free Shipping and Special Offers.

If nothing at all, offer something like “Ready to ship in 1 business day” because people are attracted to fast shipping. Anything is better than nothing!

If you’re worried about losing money, I’m happy to say that there’s a little trick you can try to where you won’t lose any money at all.

You’ll simply need to raise the price of your items, then, build in the discounts and offer free shipping into the product’s price.

People love to think that they are getting a good deal, so by starting off with a higher, your customers will feel like they’re getting a higher quality item at a really good price. And free shipping is a bonus!

If you’re a little lost, let me give you an example:

Sally has a product priced at $20 USD with $10 USD shipping costs.

Sally wants to go the extra mile and attract more customers so she raises the price of her product to $30 USD and offers Free Shipping.

In doing so, her item is being portrayed as a higher quality because it’s more expensive than her competitors (higher prices generally means better quality in most people’s eyes).

Additionally, she’s providing an extra value by offering Free Shipping!

People hate paying for shipping because there’s no tangible value in it. You can’t touch, see, or smell shipping so for all people know, it’s a waste of money (or a necessary evil).

So, by offering Free Shipping, you’re taking away any hesitation your customer may have had and they’ll be more likely to purchase from you over your competitor, who may be cheaper but makes their customers pay for shipping.

This is a key strategy in standing out from the rest while still being ethical.

You’re still covering the cost to make the product plus shipping (it’s essentially the same price as before), however, customers will psychologically feel like they’re getting a better deal with your technique.

    Sales and Coupons

You’re now offering Free Shipping without losing out on any money – give yourself a pat on the back!

So now, you’re listing is looking a little bit more enticing, but you want to make it an absolute no-brainer for your audience to purchase from you rather than your competitor.

One way to do that is through the use of coupon codes.

Here are some great ways to utilize Etsy coupon codes:

Create Exclusive Coupon Codes for your best customers

There are a few ways you could do this.

You can set up a coupon to be sent to a customer who has purchased from you as a thank you to them.

Or, if any of your customers have left you an amazing five-star review, send them an exclusive coupon just for them.

Either way, you’ll be making your customers feel special and entice them to return back to your shop and purchase from you!

Give People Enough Time To Use The Coupon Code

You don’t want to let your coupon code expire too quickly or allow your coupon to go on forever.

There should be a sense of urgency to use the coupon without your customers filling like they’re being rushed.

You’ll have to play around with this to find a time frame that works best for you, but around a month or two seems to work for many people.

Create coupon codes during popular Sales times

Here are some popular sales times during the year:

    • Federal Holidays – like Veterans Day, Memorial Day, and Presidents Day
    • Holidays specific to your niche – like Valentine’s Day, Easter, National Cats Day, whatever you sell I’m sure there’s a special day catered for it!
    • Right before Summer
    • Right before School Season
    • Black Friday & Cyber Monday
    • Most of Christmas time, from Black Friday up to Christmas

    Experiment with Percentages

This is where sellers tend to not know what to do and just make it up as they go.

Though any percentage off is great for people who want to save money, your customers want to feel like they’re getting the most value out of their purchase for the least money as possible.

Therefore, you want to figure out the highest possible discount you can afford.

Every product and Etsy shop is different so you’ll have to experiment on your own to see your customers reaction to your discounts.

However, you first want to figure out how much of a profit you’ll want to make from a purchase after the discount has been applied.

For example, if you sell an item for $20 USD, it costs you $5 USD to make, and you want to make at least $5 USD in profits, then you can afford to have up to a 50% Off coupon code ($10 USD Off).

If you sell products that are more expensive to make and maintain, you may not be able to afford such a huge discount.

Find a profit you’re comfortable with making and start your percentages there and adjust as you see fit.

    Promoted Listings

In addition to coupons, Etsy also gives their sellers the ability to promote their listings (like an Etsy Ad).

When using Promoted Listings, there are only two things to remember:

    1. Don’t exceed a certain maximum Cost Per Click for each item.

The Cost Per Click is what you use to bid on gaining a spot higher up in an Etsy Search.

Start low around $0.05 per click and slowly move higher and higher into you hit a comfortable amount and you feel you understand how to keep your costs low.

Remember, you have to account for the costs of things like Etsy Fees, Credit Card Fees, Shipping Costs, and Material Costs, as well as extra room for making a profit that goes to your own income after each sale, so properly calculate your CPC before you set it up.

Also, keep your promoted listings going for 1-3 months before taking them down so you can accurately gauge if they are working or not.

    2. Only promote your best-selling items which have roughly 3 or more sales per month.

Focus on promoting your best selling items first until you get familiar with how to make good products that sell, and you are making a lot of extra income through Promoted Listings.

Since they are your best-sellers, you know that they have a good conversion rate, meaning the odds of someone purchasing your item every time they click on it is high.

Therefore, you know that you’ll have a pretty good chance of making a good profit from Promoted Listings.
