12 Hygge-Inspired Ways to Embrace The Arctic Chill

An arctic chill is sweeping the Midwest so you know what that means…

It’s time to get your hygge on!

Ohhhh hygge, such a funny little word. This Danish lifestyle/concept offers tools to help the mind and heart achieve happiness during the colder, darker days of the year. It’s easy to go a little stir crazy when in hibernation mode because it’s literally too cold to go outside, so it comes down to a little Jedi mind tricking to tap into your winter, happy vibes.

First thing first, get cozy. And with that being said, do whatever cozy means to you. Is it layering up in faux fur blankets on the sofa or setting up shop in the kitchen in hopes of baking something scrumptious for your tribe? Coziness is a personal preference, so you do you.

You do not need much in order to feel the effects of hygge because, after all, it’s more of a feeling than it is a material object. It’s the mood and ambiance in which you set up for yourself and loved ones which help you to experience true hygge.

We trust that you already have what you need in your home…now it’s time to put it all to hygge use.
Here are some hygge-inspired ways to add happiness to your home this winter season.
Take a hot bath.

Light a candle, grab a glass of red wine and soak away. We love us some Pacha bath bombs to really set the mood.

Binge watch something.

Arctic vibes and chill? Sounds good to us! Maybe you’ll watch something new or perhaps you’ll go old school. Here are some ideas: Broad City, The Ted Bundy Tapes, The Great British Baking Show, True Detective, Black Mirror, Sex and the City, Lost, The Handmaid’s Tale, Killing Eve, The Office, the list goes on and onnnnnn.

Create a hygge nook.

Find the perfect spot in your house to make a cozy spot to call your own. And you know who else would love to make a hygge nook? Your kids! It’s like a fort on cozy crack. PS. Grab some fairy lights to really up your hygge nook game.

Bake something to make your house smell delicious!

A loaf of banana bread from scratch or gluten-free brownies in the box from Trader Joes will have your home smelling like Betty Crocker lives in it. Trust that everyone will be thrilled with your decision to use the oven for such a good cause!

Light some candles.

The warm hue of a flickering candle is a game changer, both during the day and in the evening. Whether you go old school with a wax candle or go LED, you won’t be sorry about the cozy ambiance your candles will create for you. It literally adds warmth to the mindset. Or why not add some fairy lights?! They even have ones with timers.

Read a book.

A cold, winter day is the perfect setting to crack open a new book or finish one you’ve been working on for a while. Here’s a list of some of Michelle’s favorite books. Tell us in the comments below what books we should add to our stack. Please and thank you!

Make out.

It’s a sure-fire way to keep you warm, that’s for certain.

Deep clean something.

The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo is all the rage right now. Why not take a page out of her book and purge a closet or some drawers. The feeling of less clutter will have you feeling happier, lighter, and less overwhelmed by holding onto too many things.

Sip on some glogg!

Nothing goes better with a cold, winter day than some good old fashioned glogg. Served hot, this beverage will help you forget that your car is buried under snow at the moment. Here is our recipe to get you started.

Soup is always a good idea.

From matzo ball soup to a ginger based detox soup, we have you covered. Soup is one of those items you can make in the morning and serve up all day long. It’s extra filling and adds the perfect wintertime aroma to your home. PS. Here’s a recipe for pasta fagioli (YUM and so easy) and stracciatella (a fan favorite!!!).

Have a movie night!

Pop some popcorn and press play. But first, of course, get as cozy as you can.

Do a puzzle.

Puzzles are so freaking relaxing and fun. Plus, they make you feel like you actually did something. Puzzle it up, people.

Remember, when you hygge, you do you.
What makes you feel warm and fuzzy on the inside?
Answer that question, and trust that you will find your hygge.
Stay warm and safe out there! Lauren xo
